Second Generation

5. Alexander Frederic2 Sampson (Jonas Frederik1 Samuelson) was born in Carlstorp, Smoland, Sweden May 15, 1857. Alexander died October 9, 1919 in Fluvanna, Chautauqua Co, NY, at 62 years of age. His body was interred in Fluvanna, NY.

He married Lillian Josephine Akin in Fluvanna, Chautauqua Co, NY, February 23, 1887. Lillian was born in Ellery Twp, Chautauqua Co, NY January 19, 1856. Lillian was the daughter of John Akin and Lucy Ann Blowers. Lillian died December 27, 1929 in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co, NY, at 73 years of age. Her body was interred December 30, 1929 in Fluvanna, NY.

He petitioned the court to become a citizen in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co, NY, May 8, 1916. I know very little about my Grandfather Sampson. He was a farmer and he lived on farms in the Chatauqua County area as tenant, moving frequently. In early 1907 they moved to the farm in Dutch Hollow, Ellery Twp. I have pictures of the family at that time. Alex Sampson never became a naturalized citizen and in recent years my mother (Anna D. Sampson) told me that it preyed on his mind, particularly because of the World War and his wife's brother's (James Akin) constantly bedeviling him about it. My mother felt that it is what led him to commit suicide by hanging. Clayburne Sampson note: DECLARATION OF INTENTION TO BECOME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. In the Chautauqua County Supreme Court..held at Jamestown May 8, 1916. Before Luther S. Laking, Jr....Clerk of the Supreme Court...and Guy L. Mills...Special Deputy Clerk...

Alexander Frederic Sampson and Lillian Josephine Akin had the following children:

child 6 i. Clayburne Blowers3 Sampson was born in Ellicott Twp, Chautauqua Co, NY January 10, 1888. Clayburne died July 7, 1961 in Dutch Hollow, Chautauqua Co, NY, at 73 years of age. He married three times. He married Nettie Romans Grover in First Methodist Episcopal Chur, Warren, Pa, March 12, 1923. Nettie was born in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co, NY April 20, 1890. Nettie died February 13, 1936 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co, NY, at 45 years of age. Her body was interred February 17, 1936 in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, NY. Occupation: occupation unknown in Book-keeper. He married Delight Mildred VanNamee in First Swedish Lutheran Church, Jamestown, NY, March 27, 1948. Delight was born May 16, 1891. Delight died AFT. 1960 in Whitter, CA.

Occupation: occupation unknown in Antiquarian. Clayburne Sampson was a very gifted man in that he could paint, do needle point, cook a wonderful meal, and was an antiquarian of note. He was the president of the Chautauqua Co. Historical Society for many years. His first wife worked in Jamestown for Burroughs Adding Machine Co. and was of an old family with certain assets. Clayburne worked as a "gentleman farmer" but for the most part exercised his talents in the finer things of life. He was extremely interested in genealogy of his family and his neighbors in the Dutch Hollow area. His rather extensive notebook, which I have, is the source of some of the information that has been put in this computer record, especially of the Sampson family. When he died, my mother, Anna D. Boak, was the executrix of his estate and it was necessary to have a large auction to dispose of all he had collected over many years. He was married twice after his first wife died but neither union was successful. My brother, Chuck, and I used to enjoy visiting with Uncle Clayb when my mother would come out to the farm in the summer and take us with her to visit her family. He was an entertaining person and was best when he had an audience which was frequently.

child 7 ii. Berdessa Louella Sampson was born in Ellery Twp, Chautauqua Co, NY September 18, 1889. Berdessa died June 30, 1970 in Napoli, Cattaraugus Co, NY, at 80 years of age. She married Leighton Alli Soule in Ellery Twp, Chautauqua Co, NY, July 28, 1907. Leighton was born July 18, 1877. Leighton was the son of George F. Soule and Hannah H. Hanor. Occupation: occupation unknown in Farmer. (See Leighton Alli Soule for the continuation of this line.)

child 8 iii. Berennice Genella Sampson was born in Ellery Twp, Chautauqua Co, NY April 6, 1891. Berennice died June 24, 1988 in Marshalltown, Marshall Co, IA, at 97 years of age.

child 9 iv. Anna Delora Sampson was born in Gerry, Chautauqua Co, NY April 8, 1894. Anna died March 8, 1990 in Cheshire, New Haven Co, CT, at 95 years of age. Her body was interred May 1990 in Fluvanna, Chautauqua Co., NY. She married Thomas Isaac Slack Boak in Westfield, Chautauqua Co, NY, July 15, 1915. Thomas was born in Ellery Twp, Chautauqua Co, NY January 23, 1890. Thomas was the son of John William Boak and Ida Helen Ayers. Thomas died February 7, 1969 in Milford, New Haven Co, Ct, at 79 years of age. His body was interred May 1969 in Long Island Sound. Thomas graduated in Ithaca, New York, 1914. Institution: institution unknown. (See Thomas Isaac Slack Boak for the continuation of this line.) Anna D. died peacefully in her sleep one month before her 96th birthday at the Elim Park Baptist Home where she had lived since 1976. In May, 1990 the three sons of Anna D. Sampson (Thomas, Charles and John Boak) arranged that her ashes be brought to the cemetery at Fluvanna, NY where they were interred in the Sampson family plot next to her mother. Also interred in the same lot, though unbeknown to us or to the cemetery authorities at the time, are the ashes of Leighton Soule, his wife Berdessa, and their daughter Edith Baker. Their are no markers to show the locations. A marker is there for Alex Sampson, as well as markers for wife Lillian and for Anna D. Sampson. A brief commital service was held at that time. Fluvanna is very close to where the Sampson family home was. The BOAK family plot is adjacent to the Sampson plot in this cemetery. In the Boak plot are buried Thomas, Ann, Edward Boak Margaret (and her Husband), of my grandfather's family, as well as my grandfather, John W. Boak, his wife, as well as their daughter Hattie and their son, William. Another daughter, Margaret, is buried nearby in the plot of her husband's family (Lawson). Anna Delora ("D") Sampson lived on various farms in the Chautauqua Co. area with her family as they moved from place to place. CBS noted 9 locations between 1887 and 1906 with the last place being "Louck's Place" which must be the home at Dutch Hollow with which I am familiar. Her childhood was a happy, though not affluent one, with her parents, her brother and two sisters. She went to Jamestown High School and then to Teacher's Training Class in Westfield where she graduated in 1912. She taught school for one or two years in the Maple Grove School (one room schoolhouse) near Chautauqua Lake. In 1915, after her marriage to TISB who lived on the family farm nearby, they moved to Oswego, NY where he was briefly employed by the NYCRR. There followed the moves outlined in the notes attached to the TISB record. Three sons were born to them--Tom and Chuck in New Jersey and Jack in Seneca Falls, NY. Many moves were made in their lives; including moves between and within communities it amounted to 15-20. ADB thus became an expert in homemaking, decoration and raising children. She was an expert in the collecting, gaining knowledge of, and caring for antiques. She was a devout member of the Christian Science Church, read and studied the Bible exhaustively, and practiced her religion faithfully in her every day life. Following the divorce in July 1956 she purchased a home in Mt. Carmel, CT and later moved to an apartment in New Haven. After several other living locations of varying lengths, she moved, in January 1976, to Elim Park Baptist Home in Cheshire, Ct where she lived until her death.
