Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 – Volcanoes and Aurora

We slept in after the first Aurora experience. We did a lot of walking again, although not as much. We went to Sandholt bakery for quiche and soup lunch and then headed for the Volcano House, to see a fascinating pair of movies about the tectonic situation in Iceland. The North American and European plates come together forming this fascinating island. The first was about a lava eruption on an Icelandic island from the 60’s and how they got the people off, and eventually rebuilt the island community.  The second was about the 2010 and 2011 eruptions.  You may remember the 2010, since it prevented air travel from Europe for a long time.  We then walked back to the apartment and relaxed until around 8 pm.  The aurora prediction website suggested that we would have aurora around 8 pm.  We drove back to our spot in Kidafell and saw a fantastic show.  Unfortunately, your ingenious narrator left the Nikon on a shelf while putting boots on which meant it didn’t make the trip  Fortunately, the iPhone 6s, running the Northern Lights Photo Taker app did a pretty good job.

After the show, we drove back to Reykjavík and went to dinner at Solon Bistro  We chose it because the kitchen had not yet closed, but the food, fish and chips and Icelandic trout, was wonderful.

Here are the pictures taken by the iPhone 6s Plus using Northern Lights Photo Taker.
