Day 5 – September 19 – Kristiansand
We again cruised all night arriving around 7 am. We had a walking tour of Kristianstad scheduled fairly early, so we got room service for breakfast. We headed out for the tour and it was quite a lovely city. It is the southernmost big city in Denmark and many second homes are here. Again there was a lovely old town with white wooden buildings. As the tour went on, we arrived at the Cathedral, which is a 19th century structure with lovely wood columns and ceilings. They got a new organ in 2013, and found that the wood was absorbing more sound, so they removed the carpets.
At the end of the visit, they mentioned a concert about to happen, so we cut the tour short and listened to a lovely concert with vocals, piano and organ, by the same lady. The organ had two separate sets of pipes, both of which she used during some of the pieces. Interesting stereo effect.
In the afternoon, we went back out and tried to walk to the closest art museum. We found it, but their next exhibit starts in a couple of days and there wasn’t much there. We were in the main shopping district at that point so we browsed a while and then got back to the ship for a 4 PM lecture by the ship historian on the Norwegian resistance during the Second World War, and then a lecture on Oslo, our next stop.
