Moscow, Sunday the 19th

We had a morning tour of the Tretyakov Gallery. This is a collection of art by Russian artists. Many of them had gone to elsewhere in Europe to study, so the art was European portraiture of the various centuries. The big interest item for us was the Icon collection. We started with a bus ride and walked around for a short time before the museum was to open. We stopped at a bridge which had two innovations. They were trying to stem the tide of “Locks of Love”, which started in Paris and infected the old bridge in Dock Square. They are artificial trees through the middle of the bridge where lovers can put their locks, and if the tree gets to full, it can be replaced by an empty one.

There is also a “bench of reconciliation” where two people who sit on opposite ends of the bench will rapidly be reconciled. Works very well.
We walked on to the museum, which was very crowded, since it was a Sunday and also the beginning of high tourist season. Our favorite artist was SWhose details are incredible. Here is a picture of a woodland scene with bears.
After going through the art area, we went to the icons. I foolishly think of icons a little pictures that show up in Orthodox churches. What we saw were paintings on wood done centuries ago, and often repainted over the years as they aged. Some have been painstakingly restored to their original state.

After returning to the boat we had lunch, relaxed, went for a walk in the park, read, and had dinner. At 9 PM we left for the “Moscow After Dark” tour. More on that in next installment.
