Saturday – Colònia del Güell
We lazed around a bit in the morning and then took a cab to a different Federal restaurant for brunch. We then took a long cab ride to the final Gaudí place we wanted to visit, the Crypt at Colònia del Güell. Mr. Güell wanted a place where his factory could be located and the workers could live nearby, similar to ideas tried in various parts of the US. He asked Gaudí to build a church in it. He worked from 1906 to 1914 on it and then left it for others to finish. He build a three dimensional model which hung upside down, from which others could make the 2d drawings. Here is a picture of the model and a recent rendering of it.
After this we walked around the Colònia a little and then requested a taxi to take us back to the apartment. We will go out for a final dinner this evening and then pack up and get to the airport first thing tomorrow
