Clayburne Sampson records in a copy of a 1947 talk given to the Chautauqua Co, Historical Society (from my file): "In 1829 John Blowers married a widow with a farm and an 8 year old daughter. The widow was Mrs. Jesse Lovell..the farm on which she lived was located on the Ellery-Ellicott Town Line road about three miles north of Fluvanna. The widow, who was born Mary Ann Ploss, in Ellery, had married Jesse Lovell, and within a few years had buried two infant daughters and her husband in the private burial plot on this farm. Her youngest daughter was born on this farm June 30, 1820. Her name was Catharine, --but she was called "Carrie"." John Blowers three daughters by his first wife and his step daughter, Carrie Lovell, all lived on the farm in Ellery and all were married there. His son lived there until he was about 20. Five children were born to the Blowers and the recorded dates came from the Blowers family bible. Blowers lived on the farm in Ellery until his death on Feb. 2, 1863.
Occupation: occupation unknown in PropertyMgr. A narrative on John Blowers came to me via my mother which was written by her brother, my uncle, Clayburne Blowers Sampson. It is in my file and a portion of it is quoted here. "John Blowers was Scotch. He was next to the oldest of the seven issue of James and Keziah (Sweet) Blowers. He was born "on the banks of the Hoosic River" in Rensselaer Co (NY)", Aug. 22, 1785. His father was a carpenter and also operated a tavern and a ferry." John Blowers sweetheart was Phoebe Way who worked as a maid for the Thompson family whose daughter Agnes became Mrs. James Prendergast. This man was to be the founder of Jamestown, NY. When Prendergast asked John Blowers to enter his employ and go to the Rapids (Jamestown), he and Phoebe Way were married. Phoebe was a welcome addition to the party, cared for the Prendergast baby, and was a companion to Mrs. P on the long trip to Chautauqua Co. They arrived at the Prendergast home in August, 1810. "James Prendergast wanted a watchman on this property at the Rapids--Blowers was sent to build a log house there and just before Christmas this house, the first in the city, was occupied by John Blowers and his wife Phoebe. Their daughter (Mary) was born in this crude cabin in May, 1811 and was the first white child born here. In 1813 Blowers took out a license for a tavern which he kept in this house." The Prendergast enterprises grew to comprise sawmills, a gristmill, a store. Prendergast was also the postmaster. He owned 1550 acres of land and was the only person assessed for real estate. About this time the place began to be called "Jamestown" though the village was not incorporated until March 6, 1827. Blowers built a first frame house in the village in the fall of 1814 at the what was in 1947 numbers 111-114 North Main Street. In 1816 Blowers moved to 100 acres of new land a mile or so southwest of the village.
