Grandma Boak was a hard working, capable and no-nonsense person. She was the oldest of about 8 in her family and had the family reunion each summer at the farm, doing a lot of the preparation herself. In the normal farm activity she did some of the milking, raised the chickens and turkeys, and was the manager of the home. During our summers on the farm she was our surrogate mother. She was educated as a teacher and taught in the Ellery Twp school at the top of the hill near the farm. She, more than anyone else, was the person who supported her son's (TISB) desire to go to college. She also was the inspiration behind Hattie's becoming a teacher and undoubtedly encouraged the others of her children in this aim. She died rather suddenly of blood poisoning from a cut of her finger with a paring knife.
