His notes on Barton Church lists what is noted on a brass plaque on the "south wall": "To preserve the M. Joseph Boak of Yanwath Hall who d. l. the 1st of Jany. 1780 aged 74 years and Sarah his wife who d. the 29th of Feby. 1780 aged 64 y. This plain stone was erected by their affectionate son Christopher Boak who was one of eleven children that their industry rear'd to maturity ten of whom married and had offspring. Their daughter Sarah Boak d. unmarried the 17th of March 1777 aged 24 y. and with her aforesaid parents lies buried near this place. Funerial (sic) pomp let titled wealth display And marble statues mourn the breathless clay, Sure more of nature was the gushing tear Of circling friends that wept in person here. (Filed under Notes A-2 Joseph Boak 1's will was executed on 29 December 1779, three days before his death, if that date is considered correct. John Boak 4, his eldest son, was made executor. Bequests were made to several of his children and grandchildren (he had 11 children). They range in amount from 1 shilling to Richard and Jacob to 40 pounds to his youngest child, Margaret who was 20 at his death and married to John Monkhove. All these legacies "shall be paid six months after the death of my beloved wife, Sarah Boak by my executor and trustees, and that my said wife have the interests and profits arising from the said sums during the term of her natural life.." It was signed in the presence of Sarah Boak. The will was probated on January 16, with the year not clear but I interpret it as 1781. It notes that John, the executor, was sworn "in due form of law" that all the property which Joseph left "do not amount to the value of 300 pounds." FILE W-I-2
