Day 10/11 – 18/19 Jan – Cape Horn & Ushuaia

Started the sailing day passing Isla de Los Estados, just before coming to the Tierra del Fuego set of islands. As the day progressed we went around or near several small islands.

Eventually we came to the Cape Horn island. Which has a permanent lighthouse keeper and his wife and kids living there.

After that, we came into Ushuaia. This is the “End of the World” area where the Argentine railroad ends. In the 1800’s, there was a prison here. Now it is a city where the cruise ships stop off and load passengers.

On Tuesday night, we had dinner at the Chef’s Table again and the menu was based on the spice roads of the past. It was, as always superb.

On Friday, we had the “Taste of Ushuaia” Tour. First we went to a smoked meat shop where we sampled their smoked King Crab, Lamb and Cheese. I don’t do crab, but I’m told it was wonderful. The smoked Lamb and smoked cheese were interesting. He also showed how he cans the various delicacies.

Did I mention that the day was intermittently raining and pretty cruddy for pictures? Anyway, our second stop was a restaurant for lunch. We had various courses, including pate (good), crab (I’m told it was good) and finally lamb. I did manage to take a picture of the Viking Jupiter from the restaurant.

Our third stop was in a wine shop in the middle of town. We again tasted a fortified white wine based on Chardonnay which was good, along with some appetizers.

Here is what the downtown looked like.

We are now back onboard heading down the Beagle Channel to connect with the Straits of Magellan some time this evening on our cruise to Punta Arenas, Chile. We were lucky enough to get a seat at the restaurant on the starboard side of the ship so we go the full impact of sailing the Beagle Channel and seeing the glaciers.
