Trip across North America and back

Iceland summary

We had a great trip and really want to get back there for a longer trip when we can do the ring road around the whole island and not get limited to day trips from Reykjavík.The scenery is fantastic.  Finding an out of the way thermal pool to bathe in, as we did in Yellowstone would be really fun.

Aurora – The primary goal was to see the Northern Lights and we succeeded on that early in the trip. The aurora prediction website was very useful.

Money – There are 113 Icelandic Krona to the US$. That means that 100 Krona is 88 cents. The major news is that Iceland is a cashless society.  Credit and debit cards can be used everywhere. We never had any Icelandic money. The other item was chip-and-pin vs chip-and-signature. Since most US cards are the latter, I was concerned about gasoline pumping. I had Chase and CapitalOne set up PINs for my cards and was successful. When I used these at any place but a gas pump, the machine printed a signature sheet like I’m the US. At the gas pump, I was asked for a PIN and it worked fine.
